About Indian River County
Indian River County is often called 'the Gateway to the Tropics', it's the northernmost county in what's widely considered to be South Florida. It was established in 1925 and is named for the Indian River Lagoon. Many places in Indian River County are reminiscent of the Florida of old. Huge live oak trees with Spanish moss hanging from them give it the look and feel of a place in which time has stood still.
Indian River County has five incorporated cites, which are Sebastian, Vero Beach and Fellsmere as well as the smaller towns of Indian River Shores and Orchid. There are also eleven other unincorporated townships, two of the most notable being Wabasso and Roseland. The county seat is located in Vero Beach and as of a 2000 census the population of the county was some 113,000 people. It has a total area of 617 sq mi. A large percentage of the area of the county, 18.43%, is water. As a result, there's a lot of coastline and gives it a very tropical feel. The main industries in Indian River County are the citrus industry and tourism. New Piper Aircraft also has a facility in Vero Beach which contributes significantly to the local economy there and is the largest private employer in Indian River County.
SEBASTIAN INLET
Sebastian boasts the famous Sebastian Inlet State Park a very popular and beautiful place for camping, fishing and viewing the local wild life. Boaters and water sport enthusiasts must use caution because the inlet is considered to be one of four un-navigable inlets on the East Coast, it is also the Surf Capital of the East Coast.

SEBASTIAN
The city of Sebastian has a population of around 18,700 according to a recent census.
It is 20 feet above sea level and has an area of 12.6 sq mi. The average age of a Sebastian resident is just over 45 years, with moderate income and housing cost adding to the quality of life. The town has four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.
VERO BEACH
Vero Beach is know for it's excellent beach sand quality, and surf and tidal action making it a great place to surf, boogie-board or simply take a long walk on the beach. These beaches include South Beach, Humiston Park and Jaycee Beach. There are also several noteworthy parks and theaters as well as the Vero Beach Museum of Art and McKee Botainical Gardens.

It has a land area of 10.3 sq mi. The average age of the people of Vero Beach is about 43 and enjoy moderate housing cost and incomes.
FELLSMERE
Fellsmere's is home to the world famous "Frog Leg Festival", held every year in the middle or end of January. It all started back in 1990 when Fran Adams and other residents suggested it as a way to raise money for the city's Recreation Department. People now come from all over the state to enjoy the bands, crafts and course, the Frog legs.
The city of Fellsmere has a population of 4,700 according to a recent census.
It has a land area of 14 sq mi. The average age of Fellsmere residents is 26 years.
INDIAN RIVER SHORES
Indian River Shores is a pristine beach town whose shores from March through October are a nesting place for sea turtles mainly, loggerheads, leatherbacks and green turtles.
Indian River Shores is also home to approximately 3,650 year around residents with that number doubling in the winter months. It's a relatively small town, with an area of just 7.2 sq mi. The average age of the people of Indian River Shores is 69 years with better than average incomes and higher home prices.
ORCHID
As the name suggests Orchid is a lush tropical town just south of Sebastian Inlet. It's a very small community with around 300 people and an area of 1.2 sq mi. (33% is water)
The average age of Orchid residents is 61 years with better than average incomes and higher home prices.
